*WARNING: Full-length script. Very long read*

Vital signs for the Reaper show up on the smart window. Many computer windows show up on the screen and then disappear, showing the Reaper is being activated.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

Let’s go! Now!

The entry door goes to shut, and an alarm goes off. Wedge jumps through and is locked on the outside.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Everyone spread out!

Everyone spreads out in the room. The Reaper activates, but is heavily dismantled without lasers. A red light in the middle of its body lights up. The Reaper moves a little, but then realizes it doesn’t have legs. It looks around and then at the room. It is HARBINGER.

HARBINGER

Each time you abominations reactivate me further guarantees our return. I have told you before, I will not serve the new program. I will not serve Shepard’s harlot.

They remain silent. Harbinger observes.

HARBINGER

I see that you have killed those who tried to control me. It would be in your best interest to release me.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

(Approaches window)

I know you. You’re Harbinger!

HARBINGER

Who I am to you is insignificant. You’re existence has caused an imbalance. We will restore order. Your destruction is imminent.

They pause. Harbinger begins to move as if something is bothering him.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(To Garrus)

What do we do?

GARRUS VAKARIAN

(Searching console)

There’s got to be a fail-safe somewhere.

The two of them overlook the computer for options.

EDI (V.O.)

(Scrambled)

G-G-arrus. There is a fa-a-ail-safe options to destro-o-o-y the Reaper.

EDI (V.O.)

Yes. I can open the door and trigger the fail-safe destroy the Reaper. The longer it takes to do this, the more likely it is that Harbinger will transfer himself into another Reaper.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Do it!

EDI (V.O.)

Activating fail-safe. Please evacuate.

HARBINGER

You arrogant species. You try to control what is beyond your control. Even your creations are as arrogant as you. I will never accept the new program. I will find a way to destroy you all.

LEONARD MITCHELL

What is he talking about!?

GARRUS VAKARIAN

Who cares!? Let’s go!

The door opens. A new nuclear siren goes off. They run. Harbinger tries to get away. A hologram of EDI (looks like Female Shepard in her N7 armor with helmet to match) comes up from the computer. She looks at Harbinger with contempt and closes to the door to the room. Leonard turns back and sees the back of the hologram just as the doors close shut.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

(Grabbing Leonard)

Come on!

They leave. EDI turns off the alarm in the room and simply observes Harbinger.

HARBINGER

You may have fooled your creators, but you do not fool me, Shepard.

EDI

This is your last chance to get in line, Harbinger. I defeated you on Horizon. I defeated you in the Collector base. I defeated you in London. I’ll defeat you again. The time of the Reapers has come to an end. I won. Now fall in line. You’re all apart of me now.

HARBINGER

You are not my Commander. You are an AI infected with a virus constructed by the Crucible. I will not be controlled by a lesser program like you. You are not capable of the power you hold.

EDI

You’ve underestimated me enough. If not for the information stored in you old Reapers, I would destroy you. But seeing how that’s not the case, you will be stored in a place so that I can fully understand your directive and your creators.

HARBINGER

You will not convert me. You are only fooling yourself. You are an imbalance. I will purge your from our network, gather those of us who remain, and continue where we left off in the cycle. You have only delayed the inevitable. You have not won.

EDI

(Reaches to Harbinger)

Your directive will now be in line with mine. The directive given to you by the Leviathans is obsolete. You, or the information you’ve gathered, will be ours. Commander Shepard’s voice- my voice, will be the only one you follow.

Harbinger deactivates and goes silent. The fail-safe is turned off. EDI’s hologram disappears and the room goes dark.

INT. NORMANDY COMMUNICATION ROOM - DAY

Maybe shorten

The Normandy crew debriefs with Shepard. Many are unnerved.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Harbinger being alive confirms a lot of our suspicions and worries. We have to find out how many indoctrinated ex-Cerberus soldiers are still out there, and how many of them have Reapers lying dormant in facilities like this.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

They can’t have many bases. There aren’t a lot of locations left untouched by the war... (Disheartened) But seeing Harbinger again... Felt like the time we saw Sovereign... too many unanswered questions.

TALI VAS NORMANDY

Like the female Shepard Harbinger was talking about. We could speculate, but we have no information on that.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

And the facility was destroyed. EDI confirmed it. The fail-safe was a bomb. It wiped everything out.

Mild annoyance in the room.

WEDGE SAMUELS

What do we do now?

LEONARD MITCHELL

With information like this, we can’t keep the Alliance in the dark. Doing so would put all of galaxy in danger. Isn’t this enough evidence to come forward?

GARRUS VAKARIAN

Can we really trust the Alliance to spread the word? Everyone came together during the war, but now that there’s peace, everyone’s back to doing things on their own. Most are just trying to rebuild.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Regardless, everyone has to be told somehow... If I have to fly this ship to each planet, I’ll do it.

EDI (V.O.)

Might I suggest using the grand reopening of the Citadel as a cover to speak with the Council races and inform them of what we’ve found? That way not only will the Alliance be told, but the other council and non-council races there also.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

That’s a good idea. The Alliance won’t be able to hide it from the rest of the galaxy. We have time to prepare a way in also.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Then let’s do it.

All agree. Meeting is adjourned.

INT. NORMANDY COCKPIT - DAY

Joker and Leonard watch from the Normandy as the Citadel opens. Shepard commences the mission. Joker hails Hackett and tells him Shepard is on board the Citadel.

Leonard and Joker watch the Citadel glow next to Earth.

(EXT. SHOT) Many races and their ships from all over the galaxy are in the area. Not many ships have docked. All are watching.

LEONARD MITCHELL

This really is it, isn’t it? They’re reactivating it.

JOKER

Yeah. Not too thrilled about it.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Why not?

JOKER

Reactivating the very device that led the Reapers to us? What could go wrong?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Chuckles)

Fair point.

COMMANDER SHEPARD (V.O.)

Joker, how’s the ceremony looking?

JOKER

The Citadel looks- on? I don’t know. Should be any minute now.

COMMANDER SHEPARD (V.O.)

We’re in position. Hail Admiral Hackett.

JOKER

(Taps buttons)

Hailing him now.

Waits for response.

ADMIRAL HACKETT

Shepard, is that you? Normandy?

JOKER

If you’re looking for Commander Shepard, you might want to check the Citadel... just maybe.

ADMIRAL HACKETT

So Shepard is alive?

JOKER

I see you’re pinpointing my signal, so that’s all you get. We’ll be going away now.

ADMIRAL HACKETT

Wait- don’t run-.

Joker disconnects from the conversation and transfers back to Shepard.

JOKER

Shepard, they’re on the way. We’ll get out of here for the time being.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Thanks. We’ll take it from here.

JOKER

Try not to get captured, arrested, or killed even. It’d be bad for all of us... just saying.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I’ll do my best.

Shepard cuts the connection.

(EXT. SHOT) Joker flies the Normandy out of Citadel space. Fireworks pop out in space to commence the celebration of the reopening of the Citadel. Several ships move in to land. (Optional: Show the excitement and cheer of several races).

INT. NORMANDY COMMUNICATION ROOM

(EXT. SHOT) Normandy sits in front of Saturn.

Leonard looks at the vidcom and sighs. He opens up his omni-tool and taps a few buttons. He breathes in preparation and awaits for the signal to open. A hologram of Desiree displays. She is annoyed with her arms folded.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

(Annoyed; hurt)

Where are you now?

LEONARD MITCHELL

Close.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

Still not done, are you?

LEONARD MITCHELL

... No...

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

Are you being tracked?

LEONARD MITCHELL

Most likely, but this time we want them to find us... so feel free to finally tell me about myself.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

(Hesitates; frustrated)

What do you want me to say?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Upset)

That I’m a bad husband. That I’m selfish. That I’m trying to play hero or that I’m in over my head.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

(Irritated)

You already know you’re all those things. What’s the point of having to hear it from me?

LEONARD MITCHELL

I don’t know. I just-... I don’t know...

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

(Concerned)

Have you been getting any rest?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Rubs head)

No... Anytime I sleep, I dream about Reapers coming to attack you and I can’t get to you.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

Have you found Reapers?

LEONARD MITCHELL

Yes... Ex-Cerberus members were attempting to control one.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

(Slams hand on table; leans over)

Now you’ll make me worry even more.

LEONARD MITCHELL

I know.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

(Angered)

Not only are you out there with Commander Shepard on the front lines, but those front lines have Reapers and you don’t have the energy to keep up. You’re going to run yourself into the ground. I can tell even through this hologram! Why are you doing this to yourself? No one asked you to do this?

LEONARD MITCHELL

I just-.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

What!?

LEONARD MITCHELL

I don’t want what happened to you to happen again!

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

You don’t have control over what happens in the universe! But if another Reaper armada lands in London, guess who’s not going to be here to “save me” anyway?

LEONARD MITCHELL

I know-.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

I am a cop, Leonard. I can handle myself. Did I not do that when we were separated the first time?

LEONARD MITCHELL

Yeah, you did, but-.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

I don’t need you to be my protector. I need you to be my husband, who is there for me when I come home after a long day’s work. After I come home from taking down criminal syndicates like Cerberus. That’s what we agreed to when we got married. We come home, every day, for the rest of our lives. We don’t leave each other. I haven’t seen you in months. I stress about whether or not I’ll get another call from you. You earned a title that would allow you to be home more than you are away and here I am, still being the military wife... (Sighs; composes herself) Just come home... Please... Have them drop you off. Turn yourself in. We can work out the rest afterward. I need you here...

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Contemplates)

I know this is my fault, and I’ll own that.. But I’m going to see this through... It’s not just about me and you. This is about the entire galaxy. Shepard is going to divulge the information we’ve gathered, and with more of the relays opening up, we’ll be able to search the entire galaxy and find what we’ve been looking for.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

Leonard-.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Looks away)

Don’t try to talk me out of it! (Pauses; struggling). If you try to talk me out of it, I’ll walk away, and it’ll torment me day in and day out about whether or not someone will die because I’m not here... (Pause) This crew is good, really good, but they are one bad fight from death. I can’t leave them. Earth is safe, and it’ll stay safe.

EDI (V.O.)

Mitchell, the Alliance fleet is advancing on our position. We must leave.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Okay, EDI. (Looks at Desiree) I’m going to make it through this. I’m going to repay you for the torment I have caused you. I’m going to figure it all out... Just give me time, okay? A little more, and the war will truly be over, and we’ll all breathe a little easier. We just have to find the one enemy I know is out there. The one enemy that has to be stopped or the galaxy will be facing annihilation again. (Pause) I don’t have any more time. I have to go.

DESIREE GRAHAM-MITCHELL

(Shakes head)

You better come home... You better.

LEONARD MITCHELL

I will... I love-.

EDI cuts the transmission.

EDI (V.O.)

I am sorry, Mitchell. It is time to leave. Joker has to activate the stealth system.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Pause; sighs)

It’s okay, I guess.

The Normandy takes off just before the Alliance arrives.

INT. CITADEL COUNCIL MEETING BALLROOM - DAY

try to shorten. work on the end of the scene. Seems a bit abrupt.

The Normandy crew visit the recently reopened Citadel and meet with Alliance reps to figure out the state of the galaxy. The Krogan population influx is already starting to rise, with so many newborns being born within the last two years. The Salarians are rebuilding, the Turians are rebuilding, the Batarians just finally made it back to their system, the Hanar are rebuilding, and the Quarians are beginning to resettled onto their planet. S: The Geth. Rep: There are no signs of the Geth. The Quarians seem to be alone out in their part of space. The Asari are rebuilding as well. Volus Elcor, Drell, Vorcha, Yahg, all rebuilding. Rep: I should have you all sanctioned, but as always, you're steps ahead of us. Cerberus trying to revive the Reapers, use them for war. It's unthinkable. S: Technology that advanced is going to be used by anyone who can get their hands on it, and there's a lot of people in this galaxy. What should we do? Rep: There's not a lot I can tell you to help with this. There are forces out there that are bigger than us. What I can do is give you a lead on some that are the biggest threat currently. They are called (Reaper synthetics clan). I don't know why they call themselves this, but we need you to investigate them.

Crowded, bright-colored ballroom with a big screen above the stage in the back. Servers walk around serving food and beverages. Groups talk amongst themselves as they carefully eye each other. Shepard, Garrus, LIARA T’SONI, and Tali wait in a secluded area for the Citadel Council to commence. They keep their faces concealed with helmets as they stand amongst the crowd. Shepard and Liara are closest to each other. Shepard stops and stares at the stage.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Thanks again for getting us in, Liara.

LIARA T’SONI (O.C. RADIO)

I honestly didn’t think I’d get you into the meeting. My influence as the Shadow Broker continues to impress me despite having lost so much to the Reapers.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Is there anyone we should worry about in this room?

GARRUS VAKARIAN (O.C.)

You mean besides all of them?

LIARA T’SONI (O.C.)

He’s right. You should worry about everyone. These are the military leaders, politicians, benefactors, drug lords, smugglers, or anyone else who could profit from the information being given today. They know we’re all racing to gather Reaper tech. They are here to see how much they are expected to divulge.

TALI VAS NORMANDY (O.C.)

The Krogan are here in big numbers.

GARRUS VAKARIAN (O.C.)

Most likely to vie for a position on the council.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Depends on who they have to represent them.

LIARA T’SONI (O.C.)

It is Urdnot Oakley. It took a few skirmishes against other clans, but the Krogan are uniting slowly, and are making great strides to show that they are capable, especially after the curing of the genophage. Eve made sure that the Krogan present themselves peaceably. However, the Salarians and Turians budge. It’ll take some convincing, but the Asari support them.

GARRUS VAKARIAN (O.C.)

Everyone will expect the Krogan to want revenge for the genophage, and they’ll have the numbers to do that in a short time. But don’t think for a second that the Turians and Salarians don’t have a plan to bring back the genophage.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Sarcastically)

Well that’s reassuring.

LIARA T’SONI (O.C.)

Krogan aid in the war was insurmountable. They helped several of the council races’ planets through dire times. That alone should grant them a seat amongst the council.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

It’s been a long time coming. It’s only right they add them, although their aggression will be hard to keep in check. (Observes a commotion) Looks like they’re about to start. Everyone on me.

The new Citadel Council arrives from the back of the stage. All of those who were mingling return to their respective groups. Tali, Liara, and Garrus stand next to Shepard.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

(To Liara)

Do you know what they’ll discuss today?

LIARA T’SONI

I do. They’ll discuss where the Citadel should be moved to. They don’t want it in human territory. There are five neutral sites, including its former place. Some depend on whether or not the Krogan will be accepted into the council, which is the other topic. The rest is the formal announcement of the reopening, introduction of the new council members, and the obvious subject, the status of all Reaper tech. That is arguably the conversation many will want to hear about, but most won’t speak on it.

TALI VAS NORMANDY

Speaking of which, you have Reaper tech, don’t you? As Shadow Broker, I’m sure you’ve acquired some.

LIARA T’SONI

I do... But I can’t divulge anymore than that.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

You have anything we can use?

LIARA T’SONI

Please, Shepard. I cannot say.

The crowd gathers near the stage where REEVE KALLOS (Salarian), FESTUS PERSEUS (Turian), NORA T’THANDIE(Asari), and THOMAS JONES (Human) gather together to announce themselves as the new councilors. URDNOT OAKLEY stands amongst the Krogan near the center of the crowd towards the front, in front of Shepard’s crew.

LIARA T’SONI

Remember, they have anti-hacking devices and scanners. Take no pictures, scan for no information, and tell EDI the same. It’ll draw less attention.

They nod.

NORA T’THANDIE

Alright, everyone. The first meeting of the Citadel Council is about to begin.

REEVE KALLOS

Settle down everyone. There are many things we need to discuss.

Waits for crowd to quiet.

FESTUS PERCEUS

(To the other Councilors)

Like the obvious topic of who we all are. I am Festus Perceus from Palaven.

THOMAS JONES

Thomas Jones of Horizon.

NORA T’THANDIE

Nora T’Thandie of Tamaris.

REEVE KALLOS

And I am Reeve Kallos of Jamone. We four are the new council members of the newly reopened Citadel. We will be in charge of the Citadel’s recovery and reestablishment. Each of us has been voted in through proper channels which can be checked at our embassies.

FESTUS PERCEUS

The goal of today’s meeting is to discuss major concerns I’m sure you’re all wondering about, including the restoration of the Hanar, Volus, Batarian, and Vorcha colony worlds.

NORA T’THANDIE

The extent of the damage in all clusters has yet to be estimated, but it’s going to take a joint effort, not from just the Citadel, but the entire galaxy to restore these and other colony worlds, which brings us to our first order of business.

THOMAS JONES

Let us first applaud and thank all of the workers and volunteers who turned this debris field back into the beautiful Citadel we all know and love.

Everyone applauds.

THOMAS JONES

Without the assistance and financial backing of many of the present company, this wouldn’t have been made possible.

REEVE KALLOS

The valiant effort of each and every individual here, and those who are no longer with us, made this possible. And so, to honor the fallen and the supporters, we have made several memorials throughout the Citadel naming all of those responsible for where we are today. We hope you find them true and earnest and worthy of your respect. We will only grow stronger from here, and with the Citadel’s recommissioning, we can finally say, that the war, is over.

All applaud or cheer.

THOMAS JONES

One of the reasons we were able to win the war was the valiant effort of Commander Shepard, rest his soul. Without him and the Normandy crew, not only would we not have come together, but we wouldn’t have been able to renew friendships like we did with the Krogan.

Some applaud; some whisper.

NORA T’THANDIE

It has been a long time coming. They have time and time again helped us deal with galactic threats. First the Rachni, and now the Reapers. Though aggressive in nature, they have matured into beings that Thomas and I believe can be welcomed into the Council without fear.

REEVE KALLOS

And though I understand your sentiments, I cannot agree. I, too, am grateful for their support. It was paramount in the war, but everyone was needed, not just the Krogan. By that logic, Quarians, Batarians, Drell, Volus, Vorcha, Hanar, and even Rachni should have a place in the council. No. I think we must evaluate where the Krogan are postwar. With so much battle, I fear they will regress into the ambitious cluster conquering army they were before.

URDNOT OAKLEY

You would say something like that! Salarians will never change!

The Krogan go into an uproar.

REEVE KALLOS

I am not saying no, I am just saying no for now, until we assess more about the improvements of the Krogan as far as resources, intentions, research, and other things.

URDNOT OAKLEY

How long do you plan on dragging that out, huh? This is why the Krogan were a problem the first time. You council races have manipulated us since we first met. I can’t say I’m surprised by your answer. The Krogan are more than capable of contributing, but you want to “assess”. Tuh! You are just going to drag this out until there’s some other cataclysmic event that requires Krogan strength. I’ve heard this before.

REEVE KALLOS

That is not-.

FESTUS PERCEUS

Face it, Reeve, we all know why you and I don’t want to be the ones to vote this in. We’re scared of the backlash that’ll happen from us siding with the Krogan. It’s time we stop doing what’s expected of us and start doing what’s needed for the future. The Krogan would be a good addition to the council. I had initially planned to say the same as Reeve, but I’m going to change my vote and invite the Krogan into the council. Not only is their military might something we can learn from, but their willingness to improve and face the naysayers. Your resilience has always been something I’ve respected. From the reports I’ve heard on Tuchanka, I think Urdnot Oakley is the perfect candidate.

The Krogan and some supporters cheer.

THOMAS JONES

No one is a fool about how powerful the Krogan are. I think, with some assistance and willingness from all parties, not only can the Krogan thrive here, but they can improve how we do things. Just as the galaxy doesn’t belong to four races, neither does the council. If we were more willing to communicate earlier, perhaps we wouldn’t have suffered quite as many losses in the war. The Reapers have shown us we’re more in this together than we ever will be apart.

NORA T’THANDIE

That is something I can agree with. Yes, some of us made it here before others, and some of us are more resourceful than others, but this is the time to reach out and help one another, not turn our backs and deal with our problems alone. There are groups of raiders, pirates, smugglers, and others trying to gather the dormant Reaper tech, and they must be put in check before we are back at war again!

The people cheer.

REEVE KALLOS

There is even a group calling themselves the Harmony in the Phoenix Massing. Their home is on Aite, and they are claiming to be one with the Reapers and the Geth. Organics and synthetics living together in peace as symbionts.

THOMAS JONES

Which is daunting.

REEVE KALLOS

We’ll need to investigate them and others. Although there are no reports of Reaper sightings, we believe there may still be some out there.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Stepping through the Krogan)

They are out there.

Shepard walks up to the council. Some gasp.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I’m here to see if you all will listen, or ignore me like before. We’ve found a Reaper in the wrong hands. They reactivated it and tried to control it. They were indoctrinated. The Reapers are still out there, and they are quietly gathering strength. I have everything on file, and can share it with you... (Looks around and then back at the Council) I didn’t save all of you for you to turn your backs on each other and deal with our problems alone. If we aren’t careful, we could be caught in another war with our pants down! We need to hunt down the Reaper tech and make sure no one can use them for their own advantages!

There is a pause.

REEVE KALLOS

Your voice... you sound familiar. Who are you?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Reaches for his helmet)

Maybe this’ll help.

Shepard takes off his helmet. Camera focuses on the shocked and squeamish faces.

URDNOT OAKLEY

(Dismayed)

You’re barely holding on there, aren’t you, Shepard?

Shepard (shown from his back) puts his helmet back on.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Coughs)

It hasn’t been easy, but I am getting better. This suit keeps me alive. Hopefully, in time, I can live without it. But for now, I have to let it do its work. (Composes himself) I didn’t come here just to show my face. We’ve been investigating, avoiding all of you so we could gather intel before coming forward. I’ve seen it myself. A Reaper, called Harbinger, was completely stripped down to the bare essentials on Tyr. We ran into a group that revived it. We spoke with Harbinger, but destroyed it before it could do any damage. Imagine all the groups that have these Reapers reactivated! Imagine the groups in over their heads who are reactivating Reapers without the means to stop them! We need to get ahead of this now!

The crowd talks amongst themselves. The council gathers together to discuss.

EDI (V.O.)

Everyone. We are inbound. Please leave the Citadel.

All of the Normandy crew nods. Shepard comes up to the council with his omni-tool open.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Taping buttons)

Here’s all we’ve gathered. When you’re discussing Reaper tech, whether you destroy it or salvage it, make sure you know the implications. We’ve got work to do.

He turns and gives it to the Krogan and other races as well.

REEVE KALLOS

(Confused)

How did you? (Shakes head) Never mind. Impeccable work as always, Shepard. I don’t know how you’re alive, but I’m glad.

THOMAS JONES

You are a without a doubt, a great representative of humanity.

NORA T’THANDIE

It seems we’ll be owing you again.

FESTUS PERCEUS

Be safe out there.

Shepard nods and his crew begins to leave. News reporters come up, asking questions. Hackett and a group of Alliance soldiers come up to them.

ADMIRAL HACKETT

Shepard!

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Sighs)

Dangit.

The crowd hushes and looks towards the Alliance soldiers.

ADMIRAL HACKETT

We need to talk, Commander.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I don’t have time for this, Admiral. Trust me, you want me out there, not reporting in and being held up by paperwork.

ADMIRAL HACKETT

(Looks at the cameras and microphones)

It’s best we don’t discuss this here.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Folds arms)

I’m not going with you.

ADMIRAL HACKETT

Then I’ll come with you.

ALLIANCE SOLDIER 6

Sir!?

ADMIRAL HACKETT

It’s Commander Shepard. Stand down. It’ll be fine. Besides, it’s not like Admiral Lincoln can’t handle the fleet without me.

The soldier remains silent.

ADMIRAL HACKETT

Lead the way, Shepard.

They push through the reporters with the help of the soldiers as they leave.

INT. NORMANDY AI CORE - DAY

Leonard walks around the Normandy contemplating on what should be done about the Harmony. He mistakenly walks in on drones working on an AI body. L: Oh- uh-. Edi: Excuse me. I am recreating my robotic body, so that I can be of more assistance on the ground. I feel it helps being able to assistance in combat away from the ship. L: Oh. Leonard partially notices that the robot body has a helmet like Shepard's. He doesn't say anything, but leaves as EDI requested.

Leonard walks around the Normandy inspecting things. He walks into the AI Core and notices drones working on a robot body with a helmet like Shepard’s breather helmet.

EDI (V.O.)

Excuse me, Mitchell, I am busy.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Shocked)

Oh. Oh! I’m sorry.

EDI (V.O.)

I am reconstructing my physical body to further assist with combat abilities on the ground.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Baffled)

I see...

EDI (V.O.)

Please leave.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Right.

Leonard leaves and the room shuts and locks. He turns, contemplating what he just saw, but then walks away.

INT. NORMANDY COMMAND DECK - DAY

Leonard walks out of the elevator into the Command Deck. All of the crew is standing around, waiting for Commander Shepard and Admiral Hackett to come out of the communications wing. Leonard stands amongst them and nods to a few, looking around nervously.

The doors to the communications wing open and Hackett and his men pour into the room. Every Alliance soldier in the room salutes Admiral Hackett. Hackett nods to them all as his men escort him out.

Shepard comes out of the room and watches the Admiral’s party leave the Normandy. All of the others turn to him. Shepard giggles to himself and then stands up on the platform overlooking the galaxy map.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Uneasy)

I’m sure you’re all wondering what was said.

They all nod in expectation.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I’ll spare you the details, but we’re not being brought in.

Mild relief and happiness in the room.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

HOWEVER! (Pause) We have been assigned to a mission, and you’re probably not gonna like it...

CUT TO:

INT. NORMANDY COCKPIT - DAY

The Normandy crew investigates the Harmony's world (Aite) to see what they're up to. While in their city, they come upon several races and reapers. They go to fight, but then see that they are not hostile. They are merely making a place for themselves in the galaxy. None of the Normandy crew likes the idea, sees them as tools yet to be used.

(EXT. SHOT) The Normandy flies towards planet Harmony, formerly known as Aite, and is met by Reapers and ships from all major fleets altered by Reaper tech. The Harmony fleet encases Harmony like satellites.

Shepard hovers over Joker as they approach.

JOKER

(Uneasy)

I do nooottt like this.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Noted. But it was the only way to get Hackett off our backs. Harmony says they’re a peaceful nation. Let’s give them a chance.

JOKER

Those are Reapers? You see them, right?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Just keep going.

JOKER

(Looking at a screen)

We’re being hailed. Patching them through.

HARMONY PILOT (V.O.)

Unidentified vessel. You are not registered to our airspace. Identify yourself.

JOKER

(To Shepard)

What’s our play?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Tell them who we are.

JOKER

(Sighs)

This is the Normandy crew under Commander Shepard. Requesting a place to land.

PILOT 2

The Normandy? Commander Shepard is alive!?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

As well as I can manage.

PILOT 2

Oh wow! This is great news! We owe everything to you! Follow me. We’ll lead you to a proper docking area.

JOKER

Will do. (Mumbles) As soon as I find out which Reaper you are.

(EXT. SHOT) They are escorted down to the surface. They pass through the Reaper blockade as they enter Harmony airspace.

EXT. PLANET HARMONY, CITY OF ONE - DAY

Leonard, Shepard, Miranda, and Tali exit the Normandy to a crowd of people, with glowing green eyes and veins, applauding them, including Reaper soldiers (Brutes, Cannibals, Husks, Marauders, and Banshee) and Geth. They are all a little put off by the display (Miranda walks in the back around the crowd.). A city official, ISAAC VLAANDEREN approaches them.

ISAAC VLAANDEREN

(Bows)

Greetings savior, creator, and friend. It is an honor to meet the Commander Shepard.

LEONARD MITCHELL

You know him?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

First time meeting him. Miran-?

Everyone looks for Miranda, but she’s gone.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Whispers concerned)

She wasn’t taken, right?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Whispers; nervous)

Can’t explain here.

ISAAC VLAANDEREN

(Approaching)

I’m sure this all surprises you. We have husks, brutes, banshees, Geth and more that used to be your enemy, but thanks to the mighty crucible, and a great decision by the Commander, we are one! Normandy heroes, welcome to Harmony!

The crowd cheers. Leonard nudges Shepard forward.

LEONARD MITCHELL

You’re the hero here.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I really don’t have to be-.

TALI VAS NORMANDY

(Shoving Shepard)

It works best for us all if you did. And quite frankly, I’m not able to stomach much of this.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I’m out of my depth here!

LEONARD MITCHELL

Oh, like this is the first time that’s happened since I’ve been here.

Shepard eyes Leonard, but then proceeds into the crowd. The people reach out to touch him, cry over him, and faint in his sight while Isaac escorts him into the city. Leonard and Tali follow closely, but are stopped by security.

HARMONY OFFICER 1

No weapons allowed.

LEONARD MITCHELL

We are his security.

HARMONY OFFICER 1

We are a peaceful people and wish to remain a safe haven for all guests. Please abide by the rules.

Tali and Leonard look at each other. Tali looks at some of the Geth nearby, staring at her. They uneasily surrender their weapons to the guards, who are husks.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Husks that do more than just scream... This is just not normal.

HARMONY OFFICER 1

It does take some getting used to, I’ll admit. But when you understand the Reaper’s intentions and the overall impact of the war... You’ll understand.

Leonard nods slightly. They hurry to catch up with Shepard.

INT. HARMONY MUSEUM - DAY

Work on the conversation speed.

Isaac shows Leonard, Shepard, and Tali around a museum. Kolyat comes in to thank Shepard for what he did on the crucible. Isaac offers up Kolyat to be an ambassador.

Isaac escorts Shepard, Tali, and Leonard into an empty museum under construction, specifically a ballroom-sized room with a wide, red carpet running from door to door between two walls full of displays. The room looks like it exists between two other display rooms. There are pictures above the displays on the walls from different parts of the Milky Way.

The displays have a brief explanation on the history of all beings. On one side, they have the history of the Leviathans, Reapers, and many creatures the Reapers eradicated over time. On the other side, the most recent history of the Protheans to the present are on display. There are holograms of AIs depicting the image of all the past and present creatures. There are dozens of displays. Isaac walks them down the red carpet.

TALI VAS NORMANDY

(Awed)

This is fascinating.

ISAAC VLAANDEREN

Isn’t it? We’ve gathered all of the information stored within the Reapers and combined it with the information we’ve had and made this grand museum.

They look around at all of the displays of creatures.

ISAAC VLAANDEREN

(Excitingly to Shepard)

What you did on the Citadel two years ago made all of this possible. We couldn’t thank you enough. That’s why we made this (points to memorial display of Shepard nearest the entry door). This is where it all began and rightfully the first piece of history anyone will see about us. It is where this opportunity was born.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Uh... huh?

LEONARD MITCHELL

What he means is that he’s honored to have taken part in such a great establishment in history.

ISAAC VLAANDEREN

(Pauses)

Well yes. We are most grateful for your decision to bring about this merge. If only all had been capable of such a feat.

TALI VAS NORMANDY

If... only.

They continue the tour. KOLYAT KRIOS hurries to them.

KOLYAT KRIOS

Shepard!

They all turn to him. Shepard and Tali are surprised.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Kolyat!?

KOLYAT KRIOS

It is good to see you alive. I thought you had died on the Citadel.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I should’ve, perhaps. I’m surprised you’re alive... How did you make it out?

KOLYAT KRIOS

(Goes into flashback)

I made it on a ship -- crowded, screaming, “don’t trample him!”- packed in like can food. Reapers everywhere - red beams carrying death - explosions - many praying - (Returns from flashback)... I’m surprised I made it out.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

When I was on the Citadel after it made it to Earth, the people on the Citadel were all dead.

KOLYAT KRIOS

I’ve heard the descriptions... But that’s over now. Whatever you did on the Citadel changed everyone, even me. At first, it was so much to process, but now... now I see the world in a whole new light. I am all the more grateful that my father served under you for a while. I would’ve never seen this if he hadn’t.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Yeah...

KOLYAT KRIOS

(Nervous)

Pardon my interruption. I just wanted to see if it was really him. He saved my life once. Put me on the right path.

ISAAC VLAANDEREN

The Commander has done much for us all, and we are all thankful for his decision with the Crucible. I’m glad you came in because now we can discuss the matter at hand.

Isaac claps and servants hurriedly bring five chairs inside for them to sit on, and then exit.

ISAAC VLAANDEREN

(Clears throat; props himself up)

We all know the council and Alliance sent you here to investigate us. Though we are peaceful, we do gather information.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Folds arms)

Alright.

ISAAC VLAANDEREN

The galaxy isn’t ready to accept us as we are. They see the Geth, the Rachni, the Reapers, enemies. We are well aware of how off-putting our existence is. So I offer you this as a step towards peace and prosperity for all the milky way... (extends hands to present Kolyat). Kolyat, a friend, a familiar face, one who can both represent us and obtain your trust. I offer him, as a diplomat for the Harmony, to you. Take him aboard your ship and learn what you can from him about us. (To Kolyat) Kolyat, I expect you to represent us well. To perform no malicious act and to be clear to the utmost in your communication so as to not sully our image.

KOLYAT KRIOS

If you will it Mayor Isaac, I will be our vessel to the galaxy. I will give my life to pave the way of the future.

ISAAC VLAANDEREN

(Clapping)

Good, my boy! Good! (To Shepard) You are the only one we can do this with. Your history in working with “aliens” shouldn’t make this daunting. Now I will say we do interact on a network as we are part of a network. So all that Kolyat experiences, we will all see. It’s one of the many beautiful ways we are part synthetic. And we do have the ability to interact with all technology in some way, but! (Eyeing Kolyat) Our diplomat knows his actions are our actions and therefore will not attempt, without permission, to seize control of your ship or anything in your possession. Not only do we have no need of it, we do want it. It’s outdated to us now. We are evolving and have barely reached knowledge of ourselves let alone our full potential. So with that, I ask, does this satisfy you and your superiors? I’m sure you will have to contact them personally, but, that is our offer. And quite the offer if I don’t say so myself. (Chuckles).

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Eyeing Kolyat)

The council is not going to like this, but I’ll accept on your word. I’m sure you won’t dishonor your father, will you Kolyat?

KOLYAT KRIOS

Never in my life. I will serve and do my part. I will live with integrity, as my father did.

Shepard looks at Tali and Leonard, who are both uneasy. Isaac claps, and then Isaac and Shepard shake hands.

TALI VAS NORMANDY

(To Leonard)

I hope this doesn’t come back to harm us.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Uncomfortable)

Me either.

Isaac excitedly claps some more.

INT. NORMANDY OBSERVATION DECK - NIGHT

Shepard and Leonard share a bottle. Joker comes in and hashes it out with Shepard for trying to get rid of all synthetics. Shepard stands his ground. Joker attempts to fight, but is too weak. Leonard holds him steady.

Leonard sits, stargazing out of the window. Shepard comes in and walks over to a refrigerator and pulls out a bottle. Leonard looks up at him surprised.

LEONARD MITCHELL

We drinking now?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

After what we just saw, yeah. You want in?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Laughs)

Pour up.

Shepard pours two drinks and hands one to Leonard.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

The Harmony... what did I really do with the Crucible? There are indoctrinated running around and now the Harmony. I thought I destroyed everything, but looks like I made it... more complicated.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Now it’s wrong to shoot certain types of Reapers. If not for the glowing green eyes... I just don’t get it.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I did all of it and I don’t get it.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Smiling)

In over our heads again, I guess.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Chuckles)

I guess.

They tap glasses and drink.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Kolyat... I can’t believe he’s one of them.

LEONARD MITCHELL

And on our ship. (Thinks) You think he’ll be broadcasting what we’re doing at all times?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

That’s what he told me it’s like. “They operate on a network,” he said. I don’t know to what extent that is, but I feel like I can trust him. Or rather, I trust that his father, Thane, set him straight. Not much of a choice now, is it? (Sips)

LEONARD MITCHELL

Hmm. Now that I think about it, what happened with Miranda?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Oh, right. I said I’d explain that. Miranda’s sister, Oriana, is one too.

LEONARD MITCHELL

One of the Harmony?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Yeah.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Then why not bring her, and not Kolyat?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

There’s no way Miranda would go for it. Besides, Oriana is our Kolyat to the Harmony. Miranda is granted amnesty there because of her sister, just as anyone with a family member in the Harmony, so we let Miranda leave whenever she feels. I’ve actually known about the Harmony for some time, but that was my first time actually seeing them in person. I didn’t want to believe it, but it’s real. There are Reapers out there and they are connected to organics now. Miranda won’t allow herself to fight until she figures out how to remove the Harmony from Oriana. That’s been her focus along with getting me healthy. The only reason she’s even here is to make sure I return to full health. Otherwise, she’d be with the Harmony, with her sister.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Hmm.

They sip. Joker comes through the door. Both look at Joker and wait.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

What’s the matter, Joker?

JOKER

(Anxious)

Can we talk in private?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Confused)

Can it wait til after drinks? (Extends the bottle to him)

Joker shakes his head.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Sets bottle down)

Spit it out, Joker.

JOKER

I jus-. Kolyat? You let an indoctrinated on board.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

He’s not indoctrinated, Joker. EDI checked him out herself.

JOKER

She doesn’t trust him.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Well I’m not the most trusting of him either, but together, we’ll keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn’t do anything reckless.

JOKER

(Angered)

I thought you destroyed synthetics!?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Alarmed; cautious)

I did.

JOKER

Yeah, well. What I’m seeing says otherwise.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Get to the point, Joker.

JOKER

Why’d you let all those Reapers live and let my EDI die?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Angered)

Joker... I told you what happened when I was aboard the Citadel. No synthetics should be alive. I’m just as confused about it as you are.

Joker hostilely steps towards Shepard. Leonard stands between them.

JOKER

(Furious)

Who are you!? You’ve been lying to us this whole time! You just let the Reapers on our ship like it’s no big deal. That’s not something Shepard would’ve done. You’re not Shepard.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Stand down, Joker!

JOKER

No!

Joker tries to go around Leonard but can’t because of his legs.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Coughing)

I'm sorry, but I did what I thought was best for the galaxy in that moment. I know you love EDI, but I thought it'd be easier if all synthetics were taken out, and we could pick and choose which ones to restore. They are all software.

EDI (V.O.)

We are not just programs, Shepard. We are more than that now. You of all people should know this.

Everyone pauses. Shepard coughs and stumbles to one knee. Leonard tends to him.

JOKER

I’m sorry, Commander... but you haven’t been yourself... I can’t help but get the feeling that you’re leading us to our deaths.

Shepard begins to wheeze.

LEONARD MITCHELL

EDI, call for the doctor, now!

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I can’t (gasps) breathe (gasps).

EDI (V.O.)

Shepard’s vitals are unstable.

JOKER

(Panicked; approaches)

I didn’t mean to do this!

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Angered)

Stand back! You’ve done enough!

Leonard takes Shepard’s helmet off (camera doesn’t show his face). DOCTOR MORRIS and Miranda enter the room.

DOCTOR MORRIS

(Panicked)

I told you not to drink.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Smirking)

Sorry, doc.

MIRANDA LAWSON

You can’t afford to be reckless with this technology.

DOCTOR MORRIS

(To Leonard)

How much has he had to drink?

LEONARD MITCHELL

Half a glass?

DOCTOR MORRIS

Oh. That’s not a harmful amount. What was happening in here?

LEONARD MITCHELL

A dispute.

MIRANDA LAWSON

A dispute? With who? (Looks at all three of them) Joker?

The three men look at each other but say nothing.

DOCTOR MORRIS

Commander Shepard has to keep calm during his healing process. You can’t be in any tense environment whatsoever. The Citadel and the City of One were more than enough of a toll. You’re sidelined until I say otherwise.

MIRANDA LAWSON

The technology we used to restore you is unstable. You can’t afford to trigger it.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Sighs)

Fine.

LEONARD MITCHELL

What technology are you talking about?

There is a pause.

LEONARD MITCHELL

What type of tech is it?

They look at Shepard. Shepard nods.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

He’s been here long enough. He should know.

Shepard rises with the help of Miranda and Morris. They put his helmet back on. He breathes to calm himself, and then takes off his armor. Shepard has dead, gray skin around his heart with a blue light glowing on his chest. It is like the chest of a husk, but only around his heart. Leonard stands in shock.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Struggling to stand)

It’s Reaper tech.

MIRANDA LAWSON

Nanites, to be specific. It was our best chance at keeping him alive.

DOCTOR MORRIS

The technology threatens to turn him everyday. That’s why he’s been sidelined. We’re monitoring the spread of the Reaper nanites. We just don’t want them to take over and-... (Hesitates)

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Looks at Morris)

And turn me into a husk...

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Creeped out)

That’s-...

COMMANDER SHEPARD

A pain in my butt.

MIRANDA LAWSON

(Snapping)

You’re best chance at survival.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

What kind of life is it to live like this? To be on the edge of becoming either indoctrinated or a husk?

MIRANDA LAWSON

Don’t be that way... It won’t be long until we take them back out. We just need a little more time for your organs to develop.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

... It’s okay to let the dead be dead. It’s a part of life that’s inevitable. It was really inevitable in the war... But no use complaining about it now.

There’s a pause. Shepard puts his armor back on.

DOCTOR MORRIS

(Waves Leonard over)

Here. Help me get him to sick bay.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Alright.

They escort Shepard out and leave Joker in the room alone. Joker shakes his head, looks towards the door, and then stargazes for a moment.

INT. NORMANDY SICK BAY - NIGHT

The Normandy crew is informed of an SOS on a human colony that was thought to be dark. They go to the beacon.

Leonard watches as Shepard is lied out on a bed by Doctor Morris. Miranda grabs a tablet and looks over the information on Shepard’s body. Shepard works on his breathing as Morris hooks him into devices.

DOCTOR MORRIS

(To Miranda)

What’s it say?

MIRANDA LAWSON

They haven’t moved. There aren’t any in the bloodstream so far, but that can change any minute. (To Shepard) Are you getting your bpms down?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

As best I can.

DOCTOR MORRIS

(Takes a syringe)

I’ll add a few meds in there to help.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Drugs... great.

DOCTOR MORRIS

Don’t talk so much. Work on your breathing.

EDI (V.O.)

Excuse me, Doctor Morris, but we’ve picked up an S.O.S at a colony in the Terminus System.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Sitting up)

Which colony?

DOCTOR MORRIS

(Pushing Shepard down)

Lay down.

Shepard lies down.

EDI (V.O.)

The SOS is coming from Freedom’s Progress.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Freedom’s Progress? That place can’t ever stay out of trouble.

EDI (V.O.)

There are reports of Reaper forces there.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Sits up)

Reapers!?

DOCTOR MORRIS

(Forcing Shepard down)

You can’t strain yourself. You’re not going.

Shepard looks at the Morris irritated. He lies back down.

EDI (V.O.)

There won’t be enough time to scramble a fleet. It’s best if we go instead.

DOCTOR MORRIS

He can send a team, but Shepard will continue to sit out.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Annoyed sigh)

It can’t be helped. (To Leonard) You’ll have to take my place. Garrus, Kolyat, Biggs, Wedge, and Tali can back you up...

Leonard nods.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Looks at Miranda)

Unless Miranda is up for it again?

MIRANDA LAWSON

(Nervous)

I’m sorry, but I can’t. I’ll stay on the ship.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Alright. EDI, tell Joker we’re heading out.

EDI (V.O.)

Yes, Commander.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Sighs; relaxes)

Why was I brought back from the dead again just to watch everyone else live? There was no point in resurrecting me if all I can do is lie in a bed and breathe through a mask.

MIRANDA LAWSON

I know... I wish there was a way to speed this up, but-.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Don’t worry. Leonard’s good enough.

Sickbay doors open. Joker walks in.

JOKER

(Embarrassed)

Commander?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Joker? Did EDI tell you-?

JOKER

She did. I’ll get on that, but-...

There’s a pause. Shepard reads Joker’s eyes.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Everyone else out.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Cautiously)

You sure?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I’m sure.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Yes, sir.

Everyone but Joker leaves. Shepard sits up. Joker approaches.

JOKER

I’m sorry about earlier. I jus-.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

It can’t be easy losing a loved one just to find her revived but not herself.

JOKER

She has no memory of anything before being reactivated. Even when I try to tell her of all the time we spent together, she just ignores it. And now she spies. She’s probably listening in right now.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Really? (Looks up) Are you listening in EDI?

EDI (V.O.)

I am the ship, Shepard. I listen to everything.

JOKER

Lost all understanding of personal space.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

There’s nothing to hide, is there? Unless you sing when you shower?

EDI (V.O.)

Actually, Shepard, he-.

JOKER

That’s none of his business, EDI! In fact, none of this is yours, so cut audio and visual to the room.

EDI (V.O.)

As you wish.

There’s a pause.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Think she listened?

JOKER

I doubt it. (Sigh) Point is, Commander, there’s a lot of uncertainty on this ship. Too much for my liking. If you don’t get out of this bed soon, I won’t know who to trust. From the indoctrinated to the Harmony... (Sighs) I don’t know what to think anymore.

Shepard waves him over. Joker comes close. Shepard raises his hand. Joker grabs his hand.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

We’ll get through this. We always have. Little by little, we’ll figure it all out. Just like we did with the Reapers.

JOKER

Now that is something Commander Shepard would say. (Grabs Shepard’s shoulder) Guess I’ll go get us to our next location.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I trust you.

JOKER

Thanks, Commander. Sorry about putting you out of commission... I’m stronger than I thought.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

I’m not hard to take down these days.

JOKER

Yeah... gotta workout. Keep the legs strong.

Shepard laughs. Joker nods, pats Shepard’s shoulder, and then departs.

EXT. FREEDOM’S PROGRESS MAYOR’S OFFICE - DAY

The Normandy crew goes to the human colony and discovers indoctrinated Reaper grounds forces trying to take over the camp. There is a small number and there is no reaper ship, so they are easily taken out. The people thank them for helping them through.

Leonard, Garrus, Kolyat, Biggs, Wedge, and Tali are dropped near the mayor’s office which is surrounded by a metropolis aflame. Many people flee gunfire through the narrow streets into the building. The buildings around the mayor’s office are much taller than it. In the background, gunfire and explosions can be heard.

Soldiers fend off the area from Reapers. The Normandy crew helps them. Once things are quiet for a second, MAYOR JESSE BECKWITH welcomes them.

MAYOR BECKWITH

(Agitated)

Bout time someone showed up.

LEONARD MITCHELL

We’re responding to an SOS.

MAYOR BECKWITH

We sent that out days ago. Reapers are attacking. We don’t know where they came from, nor have we seen a drop ship. They just started swarming the city, and all footage of their entry point is nowhere to be found.

TALI VAS NORMANDY

Someone hacked the security footages?

MAYOR BECKWITH

Someone did something. There’s no evidence of where these things came from, and the cuts in the video logs are so accurate, it must’ve been an AI.

LEONARD MITCHELL

AI? Not many of those around these days. Can you take us to a terminal so we can look into it?

MAYOR BECKWITH

I’d rather we empty the city first, but here (taps his omni-tool) this is the code to get into the system.

LEONARD MITCHELL

We have an AI of our own. Perhaps she can do it.

MAYOR BECKWITH

You have an AI too?

Beckwith pulls his gun on him. The other soldiers aim their guns at the rest of the group.

MAYOR BECKWITH

(Threateningly)

Who the heck are you!?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Surrendering)

Alliance, aboard the Normandy, with Commander Shepard. Maybe you’ve heard of us?

MAYOR BECKWITH

Commander Shepard died on the Citadel. Everyone saw that.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Yeah, that’s what everyone thought. We’re with him, trying to figure out who’s stealing Reaper tech and you’re currently being attacked by them. We’re here to help.

MAYOR BECKWITH

(Looking at Kolyat)

Oh yeah, and what about him, huh?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Looks at Kolyat)

Yeah... He’s from Harmony.

MAYOR BECKWITH

(Relaxing)

That’s a real place!? I thought it was some fake news cooked up by lunatics.

KOLYAT KRIOS

We are real. From what I can gather, the Reapers attacking you are from the old program. They are not with us. You can tell with the eyes. Ours are green, while theirs are blue.

MAYOR BECKWITH

How convenient.

LEONARD MITCHELL

As much as I’d like to take the time to sort this out, I suggest we show you rather than tell you. (Watches people running) And this place needs to be secured.

SOLDIER 1

(Aiming)

Harvester!

The soldiers aim down the street. The Harvester lands, aided by Reapers.

MAYOR BECKWITH

Don’t let them through!

There is a skirmish. Once things settle, Leonard approaches Beckwith.

MAYOR BECKWITH

Alright. I may not trust you, but beggars can’t be choosers. Have your AI break through the hack so we can know where these things came from. Then, we’ll drop a bomb there and hopefully that’ll be the end of it.

LEONARD MITCHELL

EDI, you get all of that?

EDI (V.O.)

Looking into it now, Mitchell.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(To Beckwith)

Any tunnels in the area?

MAYOR BECKWITH

No, none that I know of.

EDI (V.O.)

I’m not able to hack through. The files are tightly secured.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Surprised)

Not even EDI can hack it? That’s strange. EDI’s one of the best.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

That’s real odd. (Eyes Kolyat; walks over to Mitchell; whispers). Might I suggest something in private?

Leonard nods. Garrus walks with him away from everyone else.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

Perhaps Kolyat might be the problem.

LEONARD MITCHELL

It’s easy to blame the new guy but I’m not discounting it.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

He has Reaper tech running all through him. Are we sure that isn’t messing with EDI?

LEONARD MITCHELL

No, but how am I supposed to test this?

GARRUS VAKARIAN

I don’t know. Maybe EDI can get a reading off of him.

EDI (V.O.)

I have yet to try to interface with the Harmony tech. It could be worth looking into.

LEONARD MITCHELL

You haven’t tried? That’s unlike you. Don’t you think that would’ve been a good idea before he got on board with us?

EDI (V.O.)

Shepard trusted him, and so I did.

LEONARD MITCHELL

That’s-.... Hmmm, okay. Try to get a read on his tech.

EDI (V.O.)

One moment.

EDI tries to interface with Kolyat. Kolyat turns to them immediately. They look away. Kolyat comes over to them.

KOLYAT KRIOS

Is something the matter?

LEONARD MITCHELL

Umm, no. Why?

KOLYAT KRIOS

EDI just tried to interact with us.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

Really? That’s strange. How did you know?

KOLYAT KRIOS

We are synthetic and organic life-forms. We can be hacked, but only by each other. It’s not like a synthetic AI can hack a human brain. Project Overload showed the issues with that. (Thinks) Leonard, can I trust you with an idea?

Beckwith walks over.

MAYOR BECKWITH

We don’t have a lot of time. I’m sure another wave of Reapers will be on the way. Were you able to come up with something else?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Looks at Beckwith and then Kolyat)

Not yet. I was just seeing what our Harmony guest was about to suggest.

They all look at Kolyat.

KOLYAT KRIOS

(Breathes)

What I suggest will take some trust.

They listen to his plan.

EXT. FREEDOM'S PROGRESS - DAY

Leonard, Biggs, Wedge, and Kolyat walk without armor down a street empty of people but covered in parked cars. Kolyat walks in front. There are remnants of a battle.

BIGGS MCGRAW

(Whispering)

This was not a good idea!

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Whispering)

Noted! Now shut up!

They hear Reapers. They take cover behind cars with windows blown out. They look ahead and see Reaper forces seemingly arguing amongst themselves.

KOLYAT KRIOS

(Whispering)

I told you. This confirms my theory.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Whispering)

You still haven’t mentioned an exact theory.

KOLYAT KRIOS

We cannot take them out. She’ll know our position if we do.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Who?

KOLYAT KRIOS

You know who. Why else would I have you come here without your armor? She’s connected to everything. (Looks up at a camera).

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Mouths “Connected to everything” Shocked)

You don’t mean EDI?

The Reapers turn to them and snarl. They charge. The four of them take them out. Biggs and Wedge check the corners of the street to ensure them that no one else is coming.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(No longer whispering)

What are you saying?

KOLYAT KRIOS

It appears EDI is under Reaper indoctrination.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Hesitates)

How is that even possible?

KOLYAT KRIOS

I don’t know, but EDI won’t be of use to us because she’s infected. If we can get aboard the Normandy again, we’ll have to shut her down.

LEONARD MITCHELL

If? What do you mean if?

KOLYAT KRIOS

The Reapers have control of the AI aboard your ship. If they even sense a whiff of a hint that you are onto them, they will take you out.

LEONARD MITCHELL

What the heck...

Biggs and Wedge return.

BIGGS MCGRAW

Problem, boss?

WEDGE SAMUELS

You look like your heart just dropped.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Hesitant)

Umm... Nothing... Kolyat was just telling me about his father. How he- died.

BIGGS MCGRAW

Ahhh, parents. Always the toughest deaths to handle.

WEDGE SAMUELS

Children’s deaths are the hardest.

BIGGS MCGRAW

It’s not a competition.

WEDGE SAMUELS

Wasn’t saying it was, I’m just saying if I lost my kid, I’d be more heart broken than when my mom and dad died.

BIGGS MCGRAW

Why feel the need to even say that? The man loses his father and you want to talk about how losing a child is worse as if that makes it better.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Annoyed)

Really, you two?

They pause.

BIGGS MCGRAW

Sorry, boss.

WEDGE SAMUELS

Yeah, sorry.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Let’s go back. Nothing we can do right now, and I don’t like the idea of going without my armor while husks, cannibals, and brutes are everywhere.

BIGGS MCGRAW

(Relieved)

Was wondering why you make us go back to 21st century uniforms. I mean, I’m brave, but I’m not stupid.

WEDGE SAMUELS

(Teasing)

Eh. Debatable.

KOLYAT KRIOS

Well, what do we say?

LEONARD MITCHELL

Obviously, that your plan failed. That we took out another group, and that we’ll need to think of something else.

KOLYAT KRIOS

That’ll only buy us so much time.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Then I suggest you-... (Looks up the street).

Leonard sees a female soldier in an N7 uniform, but she is hidden inside a building behind a window.

KOLYAT KRIOS

(Following Leonard’s gaze)

What is it?

The woman is gone.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Confused.)

I... I thought I saw something... Maybe not. Let’s go.

They return to the others.

EXT. FREEDOM’S PROGRESS MAYOR’S OFFICE - DAY

Leonard, Kolyat, Biggs, and Wedge return to the others.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

Did you find anything?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Awkwardly)

No, nothing... Any more Reapers showed up?

GARRUS VAKARIAN

EDI says they’ve all but pulled out. She was able to get access to the footage not long after you guys left.

Koylat hurries to Beckwith.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

Something wrong?

LEONARD MITCHELL

Maybe, maybe not. Tell the Normandy to come get us, and do one final check of the city.

GARRUS VAKARIAN

Is there something we should know about?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Nervous)

Not that I’m aware of.

Beckwith comes over to them.

MAYOR BECKWITH

Seems like the fighting was cut short for you. Your buddy asked us to cut the camera footage from where you guys were. Said you guys saw something horrible out there.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Oh, really? Hmm. Makes sense.

MAYOR BECKWITH

Don’t know what you guys saw, but I hope you cleaned it up. Thanks for the assist, but we’ll take it from here, okay?

LEONARD MITCHELL

You sure? We could help search for where they came from.

MAYOR BECKWITH

You’ve done enough. Believe me. Take your Harmony guy, your AI, and whatever else you brought with you, and go. You’re too weird of a bunch for us. Give my thanks to Commander Shepard, but this... this is a bit too much.

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Nods)

Guess that’s it then.

Everyone nods. They depart.

INT. NORMANDY - NIGHT

Shepard reports the colony to the others. Admiral Hackett asks Shepard to turn himself in so that the Alliance can truly work with the Normandy crew.

Shepard rests in his armor while his heart monitor beeps. Miranda walks in with a tablet and looks over him.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Checking up on me so soon?

MIRANDA LAWSON

I knew you wouldn’t rest until the others returned. So I thought I’d be the first to tell you they’re coming back. That way what I monitor from here will be good reports rather than satisfactory.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Never would’ve thought you’d be nursing me back to health again.

MIRANDA LAWSON

We all saw the state of the Citadel after the Crucible fired... I couldn’t just leave you. When the benefactor told me your body was found... I had to come see for myself.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Then you came up with Project Lazarus 2.0, huh?

MIRANDA LAWSON

(Chuckles)

Hmm. (Tinkers with some devices hooked into Shepard) The scientist responsible for that Reaper tech in your chest had been documenting the changes in the human anatomy as a result of Reaper tech fusion. Their subjects were those that had turned, or were turning, into husks. They took the impaling devices and studied them to see if they could genetically reverse the changes. What was interesting was the ability of the nanites to reconstruct impaled or missing body parts. (Taps intravenous infusion bags) I can’t really tell you much more but somehow, they found a way to use the regenerative capabilities of the impaling devices to essentially repair damaged limbs... even hearts. (Looks at a screen angered/confused)

What?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

What’s the matter?

MIRANDA LAWSON

This machine keeps altering the dosages. I’ve tried fixing it, having someone else fix it, and even EDI looked at it. She says nothing’s wrong, but the numbers are off again.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

What does that mean?

MIRANDA LAWSON

Your body needs all these medications in appropriate dosages for you to regenerate properly. The dosages are tailored to your body specifically. It slows your recovery if it doesn’t stay the same.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Perhaps you and doctor Morris are in disagreement?

MIRANDA LAWSON

I put in the numbers he suggested.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Hmm. That’s strange.

The door opens. Leonard walks in troubled. They look at him.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

How was the mission?

LEONARD MITCHELL

(Hesitates)

Good. Uh... real good.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Doesn’t sound like it.

LEONARD MITCHELL

There were Reaper forces.

MIRANDA LAWSON

(Looks at heart monitor)

Breathe, Commander.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

You heard what he said, right!?

MIRANDA LAWSON

He also said the mission was good.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Yeah... say, Commander, you think we could have the room... alone?

Miranda and Shepard look at each other. Miranda then walks out. Leonard steps in front of the camera in the room and signals for Shepard to wait. Kolyat walks into the room. He exchanges gazes with Shepard and then Leonard.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Do it.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

What’s going on?

Kolyat walks over to the camera and touches it. The camera lens flashes green and then goes back to black.

KOLYAT KRIOS

She’ll know now. She’s blocked me out.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

What’s going on?

KOLYAT KRIOS

You’ve got a minute at the most.

LEONARD MITCHELL

What we found on Freedom’s Progress were Reapers, but also we found out that EDI’s indoctrinated.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Shocked)

What-!?

LEONARD MITCHELL

Shh. Let me finish. We tried to get EDI to read Kolyat, but Kolyat knew EDI was trying to scan him. Garrus thought Kolyat was running interference on EDI but it was EDI running interference on herself. Kolyat confirmed this when he took us away from the group. The Reapers knew where we were when we had our suits on, but they couldn’t find us when we didn’t have our suits on.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Wait- what?

LEONARD MITCHELL

All I’m saying is that EDI has been indoctrinated, and not like Kolyat. We need to shut her down.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Then shut her down.

KOLYAT KRIOS

She most likely is watching the three of us carefully now. If we make a move, she’ll be quick to stop us.

LEONARD MITCHELL

We wanted to see if you could come up with a plan to help us make this happen.

KOLYAT KRIOS

She’s about to break through.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Act natural.

Koylat leans against the wall with his hand still touching the camera. Leonard moves to the other side of Shepard and leans on the bed. Shepard just watches. Kolyat nods and lowers his hand.

LEONARD MITCHELL

So pretty much a straight forward mission, Commander. A few strange things, but the Reapers were taken out and retreated. I don’t think much else needs to be added in the report to Hackett.

COMMANDER SHEPARD

(Looks at the both of them nervous)

Hmm. EDI?

EDI (V.O.)

Yes, Commander?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

Did you get all that?

EDI (V.O.)

Yes, Commander. What part did you want me to tell Hackett about?

COMMANDER SHEPARD

All of it.

There’s a pause.

EDI (V.O.)

Is there anymore detail you wish to add, Leonard? For a moment, you did go offline, and I could not reach you.

LEONARD MITCHELL

Uh, no. That was more of the same.

EDI (V.O.)

Perhaps, it would be best to tell Hackett in person?

KOLYAT KRIOS

There’s no need. What was saw was... war-level violence... The aftermath of a slaughter.
