SEVEN DEADLY SINS

Writer's picture: The Novelist DarioThe Novelist Dario

Checking everyone else’s pockets

Whilst never learning to manage one’s own

But expecting every worker

To share their pay

Simply because you watched them work

Is the etiology of a fool

Thinking you can have without earning

Believing

You deserve simply for being

Is an ideology not even the Almighty agrees with

Sending Paul to tell us all

Those who refuse to work are also refusing to eat

Even the free gift of salvation requires working faith

Just admit you’ve accepted a kiss from laziness

So we can at least say you “worked” on your honesty

Just because society says you can have it all

Doesn’t mean they aren’t lying

You don’t even know how to help your neighbor

Because a predator convinced you

To believe

Better me than him

A collective split into individuals

Scratching and clawing their way to the top

Just so one can say, “I have the billions.”

Ostracized from their family

To satisfy a hunger that is everlasting

I bet they’re still hungry

Stuffing their faces with plates too big for them

Indulging in pleasures too heavy to carry

Why is it that we become stupefied

When the venomous snake says, “Ooo, you fine?”

Why do we know not to enter the lion’s den

But think we handle men or women?

I despise when they refer to us as animals

But it’s hard to deny when that belly rumbles

And the appetite

Has you biting a thigh… or two…

… Or two hundred

Never being satisfied

Like the victory being one number off the roll of the die

Or just barely missing the ridiculous amount of screentime

Why are we so comfortable being lulled to sleep?

I see why God calls us sheep

So grateful for a Shepherd to take all the responsibility

Like we aren’t still going to face accountability

We are shameless doing all things shameful

And combating anyone who dares to whisper

“Maybe this is wrong.”

Like letting psychos sell guns to psychos

Who take aim at psychos

Who retaliate like psychos

Excuse me-

Like letting gun manufacturers sell guns to terrorists

Who take aim at alliances

Who retaliate like advocators of genocide

I’m sorry-

Like letting local warehouses sell guns to unstable people

Who take aim at unarmed citizens

Who retaliate like victims

Or maybe-

Letting egotistical politicians have access to nuclear weapons

That can destroy entire regions

Setting off World War III

It amazes me at how anyone looks at this world

And thinks, “Progress.”

When humans haven’t changed one bit

But this is the etiology of a fool

I’d expect such a person to never notice

I’d expect them to look above and say,

“At least I’m not the one of these other stanzas.”

Like God didn’t send James to inform us

Stumbling in one sin makes you guilty of all sins

It was never just seven

It was never just actions

Or did you think you were safe in your thoughts?

Any who look to sin with admiration commits it in their heart

You read this poem

Thinking

I’m speaking about you and not me

But it’s about we

No one escapes fallacy

Especially, me

I wouldn’t have died for a single one of your sins

Which is why I must shut my mouth and listen

There is still too much to learn

So, I close with this parting gift:

The best of us lifts the one next to them up

Just because they want to
